Two Lady Lancers Earn Honors

Two members of the Cordova High School softball team that earned a top three finish in the Sierra Valley Conference has also earned top individual honors by the conference.
Lady Lancer shortstop Nikki Jones and centerfielder Vanessa Cain were selected to the all-SVC team. The duo helped Cordova to a third place in the SVC with a 7-8 record and 11-14 overall. The Lancers also earned a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoff berth.
In 23 games at the plate, Jones, a senior, was second in batting for the Lancers with a .528 mark. She was also second on the team in runs scored at 28. Jones had 21 RBIs, along with seven doubles and two triples.
Cain, also a senior, had a .429 batting in also playing 23 games this season for the Lancers. She touched home plate 20 times this past season and had four doubles, three triple and two home runs. Cain also sent teammates home; she had 19 RBIs. She was also walked 10 times.
As a team, the duo and the rest of the Lancers had a .418 batting average and .483 on-base percentage. They scored 192 times during the season and cranked out seven home runs; four from Mason Pittaro, plus two from Cain and one from Traci Mahony.
After winning only three of its first seven games of the season, Cordova won seven of its final 14 games, all in SVC action. Those wins earned the Lancers a third place spot that launched them into the playoffs. Cordova lost to Oakdale in the first round of post-season.
