Cordova High School football head coach Darren Nill was hoping to reward the city of Rancho Cordova with winning the Sierra Valley Conference title.
That was done last Friday when the Lancers posted a 59-0 win over Rosemont to win a share of the title with Liberty Ranch and El Dorado.
Next, the coach and his Lancers were looking to host Sac-Joaquin Section playoff game for the first time since 2003. The last time Cordova was in the playoffs was in 2006.
Cordova (4-1 in the SVC, 7-3) was hoping to add extra icing on its title cake with a first-round home playoff game. That sort of came to pass.
Tonight, Friday, Cordova, the Division III No. 14 seed, makes the short trek to Sacramento to play No. 3 seed Christian Brothers (8-2), which captured the Capital Athletic League with a perfect 5-0 record. The game will be played at Hughes Stadium at Sacramento City College campus. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
“We were hoping for, at least, an eighth seed, so we’d have a first-round home game,” Nill said. “What I really wanted was a hometown game for the community.”
Christian Brothers has played seven of its 10 games this season at SCC.
Cordova has averaged 39.4 points per game on offense. On defense, the Lancers have given up an average of 19.6. The host Falcons flies on offense at 37 points per game, and defense giving up 20.6.
“My guys play well on the road,” Nill said. “I think we match up well with Christian Brothers. We will be ready to play.”
The Cordova-Christian Brothers winner will play the Burbank-Benicia winner. Burbank is the No. 11 seed and Benicia No. 6.
The SVC’s tri-champions all play tonight – Cordova and Liberty Ranch, the No. 7 seed in D-IV and plays at No. 2 Placer. El Dorado, also in D-IV, is the No. 5 seed, and plays at No. 4 seed Los Banos.
