After losing its first two Sierra Valley Conference games of the season, the Cordova High School boys soccer team picked up its first win on Tuesday.

Hosting El Dorado at Lancers Stadium, the Lancers proved to be too much on offense for the Cougars, posting a 3-0. Cordova improved to 1-2-1 in the SVC and 4-9-4 overall going into yesterday, Thursday’s game against Liberty Ranch, which will wrap up the first round of conference action.

“(Tuesday) was an important game for the boys, and they played a good match,” said Cordova head coach Eric Mc Cahon. “Collectively, we put forth a really solid effort on both sides of the ball.”

The Lancers led 2-0 at halftime, and added their final goal in the second half. Two of the goals came off the feet of Erick Hernandez-Chavez, both in the first half. Mark Romanyuk scored the third goal.

Oscar Natalio had an assist for the Lancers, with Eder Gamez leading the team’s defense en route for the shut out.

Mc Cahon hopes that Tuesday’s win would carry momentum over into last night’s game at Liberty Ranch. The win over El Dorado puts Cordova into fourth place, and battling for one of the conference’s three playoff spots.

“Hopefully this match serves as a spring board to success closing out the first half of league against Liberty Ranch,” Mc Cahon said.

Union Mine 3, Cordova 1

In an SVC contest at the Diamondbacks’ field in El Dorado on Jan. 19th, the Lancers and Union Mine were tied 1-1 at halftime. But the D’backs broke the tie I the final 40 minutes of the game with two goals.

The Lancers’ lone goal was from Hernandez-Chavez. Cordova goalie Kevin Bejines had three saves in the game.

After last night’s game at Liberty Ranch, Cordova starts the second round of SVC action against Rosemont at Lancers Stadium. Next Thursday, Feb. 2nd, Cordova continues SVC play at Galt, which is in first place. Game time for both games start at 6 p.m.
