On Tuesday night, the Cordova High School boys basketball team needed extra time to keep its top spot in the Sierra Valley Conference.
Opening the second round of conference play at rival Rosemont, the Lancers overcame a 62-62 tie after four quarters to post a 76-71 win over the Wolverines.
Entering Tuesday’s game, Cordova, along with Rosemont and Liberty Ranch, were tied for first place at 4-1 each. Now it’s just Cordova and Liberty Ranch, the defending SVC champions, which beat Galt 73-21, also on Tuesday. In their first meeting toward the end of last month, Cordova (5-1 in the SVC, 12-10 overall) edged Liberty Ranch 65-62 at the Hawks’ gym in Galt. Both teams face each other again one week from today at Lancers Gym.
Going back to Tuesday’s game, the Lancers outscored the Wolverines by a 14-9 margin to secure the win and stay atop of the SVC top spot. After the Wolverines jumped out to a 64-62 lead, Lancer guard Calvin Augusta tied the game again with a shot from the field for another tie at 64-64.
Toward the end of the overtime period, Cordova took advantage of two more shots from the field from Markell Briggs and Mike Brown, which gave the Lancers a 70-67 lead. Augusta scored four of the Lancers’ six points in the final minutes to secure the victory.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Rosemont led 45-42. Both teams traded leads and ties, with the final lead for the Lancers coming from a shot from guard Jason Novik. That led to a 62-60 Cordova lead before Rosemont tied the game, and sent it into overtime.
Scoring 14 and 16 points in the first and second quarters respectively gave Cordova a 30-24 halftime lead.

In an SVC game at Lancers Gym on Jan. 28th, the Lancers jumped out to a 22-17 first quarter lead that set the tone for the game.
Cordova’s defense kept the visiting Diamondbacks’ defense in check in the second quarter, holding them to only 10 points. At halftime, the Lancers led 34-27.
Union Mine continued to stay the course in the second half, with a combined 23 points. But Cordova had the edge with 32 points in the final 16 minutes of the contest to secure the win.
Today, Friday, Cordova continues SVC action with a road game at El Dorado. Next Tuesday, the Lancers are back in their own gym, as they welcome Galt, which remains winless in conference play. Both games are scheduled for tip-off at 7 p.m.
