CHS Engineering Students Named State Winners for Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest

RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - Cordova High School (CHS) engineering students were named state winners in the very competitive Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest! This national competition is designed to boost interest and proficiency in Science, Technology, Engineering, and MATH (STEM). The students devised a plan to serve the homeless population by envisioning a vending machine that would exchange trash for personal hygiene products. In the next step of the competition, the team will create a video presentation of their project. Best of luck to them as they continue to compete for the grand prize!

Students at CHS Build Budgeting Smarts

Recently, CHS students experienced a dose of real-life learning thanks to the school’s ongoing partnership with SAFE Credit Union. Led by the CHS Business Technology Academy, the latest Reality Fair was a simulation in which students received profiles with a set income, family size, and even debt loads. During the simulation, students were asked to make sometimes difficult decisions on balancing income and expenses. The exercise is designed to let teenagers better understand the financial challenges they will face as adults and provides important practical financial education they can use in the real world.

Cordova Gardens Second Grade Students Raise Salmon in Class

Cordova Gardens second grade students hatched, raised and released Chinook salmon! Second grade teachers Beate Vuilleumier and Angie Limpus were trained and certified by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in order to conduct this education program. Students studied the science of fish, their life cycles, measured their growth, drew diagrams and wrote letters to their fish. This is an example of the comprehensive Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) approach that teachers at Cordova Gardens use.
