SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - If Friday nights' 51-49 victory by Cordova at Hiram Johnson is any indication, this season is going to be a fun one within Greater Sacramento League play.

With 17.7 remaining and Cordova (6-11 overall, 1-0 GSL) leading by one, Lancers' junior guard Raushaun Pinkney stepped to the free throw line with a chance to give his team a three-point lead. After missing the first free throw, he connected on the second, giving the Warriors a chance to tie or win the game outright with a three-pointer.

Hiram Johnson (12-6 overall, 0-1 GSL) would ultimately get a clean look at a three-pointer from the left corner that would have won the game at the buzzer for the Warriors, but sophomore JaVon Lee's attempt clanked off the back of the rim, allowing the Lancers and their supporters in attendance the chance to exhale.

"It feels good to escape out of here with the win," Lancers' head coach Fletcher Johnson said afterward.

The final seconds were a microcosm of the game itself for both teams, as the game never was out of reach for either side throughout the night. Cordova's largest lead was just eight points at halftime, however Hiram Johnson was able to cut it down to four entering the final quarter, setting up the thrilling finish.

Do-it-all senior guard Isaiah Bolden scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in the first quarter for Cordova, and was aided by junior guard Tavion Thomas-Dominguez, who chipped in nine. The Warriors were led by senior Andre Blackwell, who tallied 10 points in what was an overall team effort from a scoring perspective by a much improved Hiram Johnson squad.

Cordova hosts visiting West Campus this Friday, January 17, with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. inside the main gym.
