Boys Basketball
ROCKLIN, CA (MPG) - The Cordova boys varsity basketball team was bounced from postseason play following a 83-60 loss at Whitney on February 19 in their formal first round game within the CIF Sac Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.
The Lancers, playing on back-to-back nights after defeating Mira Loma 73-51 the night prior in a play-in game, fell to the Wildcats despite valiant individual efforts. Senior Isaiah Bolden led Cordova with 26 points, and was aided by fellow senior forward Kenny Brown who chipped in 10. Junior guard Raushaun Pinkney added 10.
The performance by Bolden was overshadowed by a slow start to the contest, as the Lancers trailed by eight points after the first quarter. After scoring just nine points in the second quarter, Whitney entered halftime with a 20-point lead it would not relinquish.
In their play-in victory against Mira Loma on February 18, Brown led Cordova with 19 points. Bolden added 15, and juniors Allan Davis and Tavion Dominguez Thomas added nine points apiece.
Girls Basketball
FOLSOM, CA (MPG) - After a successful run which saw the Cordova Lady Lancers varsity basketball team earn a share of the Greater Sacramento League championship this season, the girls saw their year end abruptly following a 68-54 loss at Vista Del Lago on February 18, in their opening round matchup within the CIF Sac Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.
The Lady Lancers were unable to overcome strong efforts from Eagles' sophomore Sofia Lendahl (21 points), senior Mia Perez (16 points), as well as sophomore Kira Sadler and junior Giana Garcia (11 apiece). Cordova was led by do-it-all junior Emika Love who tallied 20 points. Fellow junior Eva Graf scored 11, and senior Brianna Escobar added nine.
The Lady Lancers, who led by four points at halftime, were doomed by a poor third quarter which saw the Eagles explode for 27 points. Cordova would trail by 11 entering the fourth quarter and were unable to mount the comeback.
Girls Soccer
FOLSOM, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lady Lancers varisty soccer team was unable to parlay its stellar regular season into postseason success following a 10-0 loss at Vista del Lago on February 19.
The Lady Eagles jumped ahead early, scoring six goals in the first half to set the tone. The four additional goals they added in the second half were just the icing on the cake. Senior Robin Klos and sophomore Klaire Horton each scored two goals apiece to pace Vista del Lago, with six others joining the fray in what was a crushing defeat for Cordova.
The Lady Lancers did earn a share of the Greater Sacramento League title along with rival West Campus this season, in what is a great accomplishment. A largely young team, Cordova should see a healthy amount of returning players next winter as they attempt to win a second-consecutive league title and advance further come playoff time.
Boys/Girls Wrestling
STOCKTON, CA (MPG) - The Cordova Lancers varsity wrestling team recently sent one participant each from both the boys and girls teams to the CIF Sac Joaquin Section Masters meet at the Stockton Arena on February 21-22.
When it was all said and done, senior team captain Atziry Chavez qualified for state and will be representing the Lady Lancers this weekend in the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield, CA.
"It's a huge accomplishment for her," Cordova head coach Dave Moore said.
On the boys side, junior Marc Hontz, who had been one of the top wrestlers throughout the season, did not advance past the first day.
"I feel fairly content with how things turned out," Moore said of his teams' overall performance with just one athlete heading to state. "We were able to capture the (Greater Sacramento) league title and do some good things along the way."
The CIF State Championships will take place from February 27-29 at Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield.
