SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - Former Elk Grove Mayor Gary Davis announced his candidacy for Sacramento County Supervisor with a commitment to serve neighborhoods, rebuild small businesses from the devastation of COVID-19, and make public safety the foundation of stronger communities.
“These are extraordinary and challenging times that call for experience and leadership,” said Davis.
“Families are struggling and many small businesses have shut their doors. We need to rebuild the local economy and restore trust in our communities. That is why I am running for Sacramento County Supervisor.”
Born and raised in Rancho Cordova, Gary played Little League and was on the Cordova High Lancers football team. Growing up, he was instilled with the pride of deep community involvement. When residents of the new city of Elk Grove decided that their vision was not coming to fruition they demanded new direction and elected Gary to the City Council to change the culture at City Hall. He became the first directly elected Mayor of the City of Elk Grove, where he focused on neighborhoods.
As Mayor, Gary navigated Elk Grove through the Great Recession and the city emerged stronger. He led Elk Grove’s turnaround from its rating as the least business-friendly city in the region to earning back-to-back awards as the most business-friendly city. Violent crime fell for 10 consecutive years during Gary’s tenure as Council Member and Mayor and he launched a series of Neighborhood Leader Summits, leading to greater resident participation and stronger neighborhoods throughout Elk Grove.
More than any other potential candidate, Gary knows Supervisorial District 5 inside and out and will work to deliver resources the community needs. Smartly utilizing diminished County tax revenue and getting businesses back on their feet are what it will take to rebuild the Sacramento County economy.
Gary believes that public safety is the foundation of a strong community. If residents don’t feel safe, they won’t engage in the community around them. A strong sense of community, where neighbors know each other, leads to safe neighborhoods. This means that all residents must feel safe, including communities of color. Gary will play a hands-on role in working to build trust and effectiveness among all of our communities and law enforcement officers.
A graduate of Sacramento State, Gary says his greatest college accomplishment was marrying his wife, Heather Davis, who was re-elected in March, 2020 to a second term on the Sacramento County Board of Education. They are the proud parents of three children.
