RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - As the weather gets warmer, the Cordova High School boy’s golf team appears primed for a strong season.

This season, the boy’s team has 12 players including five that have not played before this season. Two standouts are Stephen Nefsky, who sports a single digit handicap, and Jack Madden.

The Lancers are competing for the Greater Sacramento League (GSL) title and were scheduled to play league favorite West Campus in a pair of matches at Mather Golf Course on March 21 and 23. However, the matches were called off as part of the current fallout from the strike within the Sacramento City Unified School District.

Looking ahead, the GSL will host the Division IV Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs at Mather Golf Course starting on May 9. The league champion moves on to this team competition while other schools can bring six golfers for the individual competition.

The girl’s team, which competes in the fall, sent sophomore Sierra Adair and freshman Christiana Laret to sectionals.

Outside of the on-course success, third year golf coach Scott Freeborn has set out to build a program that can offer athletic outlets for students.

“When I took over the program, my approach primarily was to get the kids involved in an activity they can do their whole lives,” Freeborn said. “It is a great group of kids.”
