RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - It all comes down to this for the Cordova Lancers varsity boys’ volleyball team.
With just two games remaining in their regular season schedule coming out of spring break, the team is well aware of the stakes. The Lancers (14-9 overall, 4-4 Metro League) are currently tied with the Antelope Titans (13-11 overall, 4-4 Metro League) for third-place in league standings, with that being the final playoff spot allotted to teams within league. Antelope currently holds the tiebreaker following a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-21) victory on March 27 at Antelope High School.
The two teams will square off once more at 6 p.m. April 22 at Cordova, in a matchup that could ultimately decide the Lancers' postseason fate within the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) Sac Joaquin Section Division II playoffs. Lose, and the Titans will hold the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over the Lancers with one game remaining, which would prevent them from making the playoffs.
A Cordova win would keep the team's hopes alive, but the boys will have their work cut out for them. In their regular season finale, the Lancers host first-place West Park (18-9 overall, 7-1 Metro League) at 6 p.m. April 24. Antelope travels to McClatchy the same day, facing a team that has yet to win a league game.
Cordova will need big games from a trio of seniors in setter Grant Carr, outside hitter Ali Aljanabi and middle blocker Malachi Gorman to achieve their goals but it will certainly be an all-out team effort aided by the coaching of head coach Joseph Smith.
The Lancers must play their best volleyball of the season and win their remaining two games against top quality competition to make the playoffs. With both games being at home, the Lancers have the homecourt advantage but will need tons of Big Red support. Be sure to wear red and get loud!
